The Šibenik-Knin County General Hospital
Complete energy renovation according to the ESCO model FIND OUT MOREDuration of works: February 2018 - August 2018
Client
Šibenik general hospital
The General Hospital of Šibenik-Knin County was opened in 1883, it was then a modern pavilion-type hospital. The Polyclinic building was last added in 1982, and after that the hospital was not extensively renovated. It currently has 296 beds, and it is estimated that 110,000 people gravitate towards this institution, of which approximately 15,000 patients are treated annually. The hospital employs approximately 950 employees and is a modern general county hospital where diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are performed.

Challenge
Energy renovation of the complex
The hospital complex consists of 14 buildings, of which 11 buildings were renovated as part of the energy renovation, with a total area of 24,106.00 m2. The hospital had to function smoothly during the works, which had to be carried out in a short time, and the biggest challenge was the complete reconstruction of the boiler room, in which completely new equipment was installed. It is also specific that a large part of the buildings is made of natural stone, on which it was not allowed to install thermal insulation, thus achieving energy savings was an even greater challenge.
Solutions
Measures used
- thermal insulation of 8,400 m2 of the facade
- thermal and waterproofing of 2,120 m2 flat roofs
- thermal insulation of 5,600 m2 pitched roofs
- replacement of 2,830 m2 of worn exterior carpentry with new PVC carpentry
- indoor and outdoor lighting was replaced with more energy-efficient LED lighting, a total of 4,894 lighting fixtures
- a central air conditioning system was installed, 10 VRF systems with 134 indoor units were installed, which improved user comfort
- the boiler room and 9 heating substations were completely renovated.
- new hot water preparation system
The new domestic hot water preparation system involves the preparation of over 3 highly efficient heat pumps that use an ecological cooling medium as a coolant. Heat pumps are assisted by 33 solar collectors and two smaller gas cascade devices. All systems are interconnected and automated in order to achieve maximum savings and enable central monitoring and management from one room.
Results
After renewal, savings of 51%
After the energy renovation, ecological energy sources are used, which greatly reduced the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere, a total of 49%. After the renovation, the boiler house starts using natural gas as the primary energy source, and almost the entire amount of DHW is prepared from renewable energy sources. Energy consumption before the energy renovation was 7,731,183 kWh/year and after the renovation it was 3,921,832 kWh/year, which is a saving of 51%. The costs for energy before the renovation amounted to approximately HRK 4,347,929.00/year, and after the renovation, they amount to approximately HRK 1,961,294.00/year. The return of the investment will be realized from financial savings in the next 14 years.
